Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: 'Call On God' Video | 'Soul of a Woman' Out November 17th

Sharon Jones wrote "Call on God" in the late 1970’s for E.L. Fields' Gospel Wonders, a choir she sang with throughout most of her life at the Universal Church of God in New York City.

This original recording with the Dap-Kings dates to early 2007 during sessions for the album 100 Days,100 Nights. Just like on the song "Answer Me" from that album, Sharon played all the piano and sang her parts live with the band, providing very specific direction of exactly how she wanted the music to sound. Though she always provided input on all her songs, it wasn’t common for Sharon to take full charge of the arrangements like she did on these two gospel tracks. It was so inspiring for the band that they made a pact to record an entire gospel album with her at the helm. "Call on God" was put aside to be included on that eventual gospel album - but sadly, the project was never completed.

On December 18th, 2016, Pastor Margot Fields, E.L.'s widow, presided over Sharon's memorial service in Brooklyn which was attended by several of the original members of the Gospel Wonders who had come in from different parts of the country to help celebrate Sharon's life. Together again, they performed a moving tribute to Sharon as part of the service. After the service, Bosco Mann and the Dap-Kings invited the singers, all great friends of Sharon's, back to the Daptone House of Soul studios in Bushwick to finish "Call on God" with them. At the studio, the members of the choir put on headphones and heard Sharon’s voice singing the song she wrote for them three decades earlier. Sharon always wanted to add background vocals to the song and she would have been happy to know that her old friends had come through to sing with her one final time.

Prior to her death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, Sharon Jones was nominated for her first Grammy award for the 2014 release, Give The People What They Want, toured and performed tirelessly, and was the subject of Miss Sharon Jones!, an acclaimed documentary by Oscar-winning director Barbara Kopple. Yet somehow, the beloved and heroic soul singer found time to complete a studio album. Soul of a Woman features eleven songs recorded with her long-time co-conspirators, the Dap-Kings, which reveal that the emotion, dynamics, and drama of Jones' voice remained at full power until her final days. The album is a lush, orchestral masterpiece, a true testament to the life and career of Daptone's fearless leader and one of the world's greatest performers.

Praise for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings:

"Starting at age 40, [Sharon Jones] began to realize the dream of every kid who ever saw a mic and thought 'One day...' She went on to forge a 20-year career of incomparable performances and influential recordings that'd be the envy of any artist out there. And in those final, difficult years, her dedication to her band and fans, her ineffable presence on stage, reminded me that there is still a beauty and grace in this world that even the specter of death cannot diminish." - NPR

"In venues filled with people half her age, [Sharon] Jones was the most dynamic person in the room, bolting onstage and commanding the crowd... respecting the soul and funk elders that defined the genres while displaying seemingly boundless vitality. Jones' power was the ability to straddle the line between thankful humility, born out of late-in-life success, and boastful performer." - Rolling Stone

The Los Angeles-based company is once again collaborating with The Pier to bring a myriad of immersive and hands-on experiences to The Twilight Concert Series for attendees of all ages to enjoy, including new carnival-style activities and a large-scale art installation by Snarkitecture.

The Twilight Concert Series 2017 media partners include KCRW. The series is part of the station’s celebrated Summer Nights which features free, all-ages, outdoor shows throughout communities in the greater Los Angeles area and beyond.

This year, the Pier has made a commitment to make getting to the concerts easier than ever. In addition to encouraging concert goers to take the Expo train line running from Union Station through West Los Angeles to Santa Monica, they will be adding an UBER/LYFT drop-off/pick-up zone at Olympic and Main, an extra bike valet on Ocean and Broadway and are developing maps to show all easy non-driving options like EXPO, Bus, Bike valets, Breeze Bikeshare & ridesharing locations available at HowToTwilight.com. Additionally, the Pier has a new campaign to reduce trash on the beach with Beach Trash Ambassadors reminding people to pack out what they pack in, make sure no glass gets buried in the sand, pick up stray items and show people the closest bin.

“Twilight is not only one of the last great free concert series but an annual exercise in community-building that reconnects families, friends and neighbors, which the City's own Wellbeing Survey found is one of the primary drivers of a happy community,” notes the Santa Monica Pier’s Executive Director S. Jay Farrand. “The emphasis on the diversity of genres, artists and eras in the lineup ensures a cross pollination of generations, backgrounds and income levels that makes it unique among festivals.”

JAY SOM Shares "One More Time, Please" Music Video

Bay Area-based artist Jay Som - a.k.a. multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer Melina Duterte - released her stunning break-out album Everybody Works earlier this year. The record debuted on the Billboard Independent Album and Heatseekers charts, and earned her a "Best New Music" review from Pitchfork, as well as international accolades from the likes of New York Times, The New Yorker, NPRRolling Stone and many more. Today, Duterte shares a music video for Everybody Works highlight "One More Time, Please."

We wanted to honor the heaviness of Melina’s lyrics by channeling the essence of madness many feel while attempting to live up to societal standards, behaviors or even personal obsessions. This madness can become mentally and physically enslaving. We follow the main character as she attempts to satisfy these standards/obsessions until she realizes her obsession with such is more of an internalized threat. This realization of her own obsessive state guides her to find her own peace of mind and acceptance of herself.

SOCCER MOMMY Shares New Song via NPR, Announces Mini-Album out 8/4 on Fat Possum

Soccer Mommy - the project of nineteen-year-old Nashville native, NYU student and musical wunderkind Sophie Allison - has built a reputation as an incredibly exciting DIY artist, recording her own songs and releasing them for free on Bandcamp over the last few years. Today, Soccer Mommy announces that she has signed withFat Possum Records and will release a mini-album entitled Collection on August 4th. Comprising of reworked versions of some of her best Bandcamp releases, as well as a few new songs written, mixed and produced by Sophie herself, Collection is the perfect introduction to Soccer Mommy's sound: quietly catchy, surprisingly confrontational, the kind of music that sneaks up on you and makes a permanent first impression. Pre-order Collection HERE.

Listen to the first new song "Out Worn" - a relatable, anthemic and overall searing takedown of the desire for male validation - via NPR's Songs We Love HERE.

The songs on Collection portray an artist fully-formed, mature far beyond her age. Sophie sings of toxic relationships, infatuations, and all the experiences of being a teenage girl. There's a freedom and a joy to this music, and Collection stands as an excellent introduction to a powerful new voice. Critics may decry the end of guitar music, same as they have for over thirty years. The fact remains that as long as records like Collection exist, there will be no shortage of young artists bashing their hearts out on guitars for years to come. These perfect pop gems have power, and Collection is destined to be a favorite record.

Track listing:

1. Allison

2. Try

3. Death By Chocolate

4. Out Worn

5. 3am At A Party

6. Inside Out

7. Benadryl Dreams

8. Waiting For Cars
