Baths Shares New Album 'Romaplasm': Out Today via Anticon

November 17, 2017

New music from Will Wiesenfeld aka Baths is always an event, but when it heralds the arrival of a whole new album (his first since 2013’s Obsidian), it’s really something to get excited about. The carefully constructed and masterful Romaplasm is Wiesenfeld's 3rd album and it showcases Wiesenfeld's songwriting ability like never before. It is out everywhere today via Anticon / Tugboat Records (Japan). Listen to it in full HERE.

PRAISE FOR BATHS:

"If you're in dire need of a smile, this is the perfect place to start." - Pigeons & Planes

"Adding a beat has done wonders for packaging his sound, suddenly making his upcoming Romaplasm a last-minute highlight of the year." - High Snobiety

"...perfectly produced bedroom pop that actually imagines leaving the bedroom." -  Paste Magazine

"[Romaplasm] is unadulterated, lush, layered—much like life, itself. Never, though, has existentialism and the human quest for purpose sounded so damn bubbly." - Nylon

Comfort can be a crutch or a conduit for a creative breakthrough. For Baths, it’s led to a level of artistic confidence and stability that’s allowed him to produce his finest work. Enter Romaplasm, a profoundly emotional record steeped in the at-home obsessions of LA's Will Wiesenfeld.

"I'm not as emotive with real world things as I am when I’m neck deep in anime, video games, books or comics...” Baths says. "I wanted to be honest with myself that this is where my heart lies and where I get the most emotion out of life. I wanted a record that mirrors those emotions but in an indirect way."

In his own singular style, Baths has created his own post-modern take on Romanticism.Romaplasm bears a similar emphasis on emotion and individualism. You can see the hallmarks of the movement’s stress on awe—and like many of the great Romantic artists, he confronts the gnawing chaos of life with a focus on beauty and the sublime.

For as long as Will Wiesenfeld has been Baths, he’s been trafficking in perfect—or, more often and more interestingly—near-perfect pieces of pop. The project first emerged in 2009, merging the glitchy, punishing gloom of L.A.’s beat scene with sunnier melodies and vocals that often drifted into falsetto. The music was an instant sensation. Publications like Pitchfork heaped praise on his debut album, 2010's Cerulean, which codified the sound;Obsidian, which followed three years later, in part chronicled Wiesenfeld’s recovery from a ghastly illness, and was even more well-received.

The opener "Yeoman" could slide into Top 40 radio rotation, except for how tactilely you feel each component part, like Baths is constructing the record right in front of you, in real time; "Superstructure" marries an earnest and straightforward vocal to a track that’s glitchy and propulsive and could soundtrack the climax of a gritty art film.

As with any artist who toys with name and identity, Wiesenfeld's nods to a life that is truly personal (rather than persona) are given extra weight, extra attention. When he sings, on “Human Bog,” "Queer in a way that’s failed me / I’m not enough of anything," it's dripping with the sort of despair that’s won only through years of lived experience. Wiesenfeld is an artist who, through his work as Geotic, has carefully deconstructed songwriting into its basest parts; as Baths on Romaplasm, he reassembles the pieces of his musical and personal lives in the most piercing ways imaginable.

As always, Baths is unafraid to run counter to his surroundings: delicate when others are posturing, gripping and visceral where others drift into the digital morass. But this album is not about contrarianism, or about rejecting the status quo. It’s about centering the things that are important to you, and doing so in the most honest way possible, even if that means fucking things up a bit along the way.

Introducing EST-HER: Former Ballet Dancer Shares Second-Ever Song + Video via Pigeons & Planes

November 15, 2017

Toronto native Est-Her was a professional ballet dancer with a successful dancing career ahead of him, until one day he pushed it all to the side. After spending many late nights after rehearsal writing music, he decided it was time to pursue a musical career under his moniker. Est-Her soon caught the attention of producers at home in Toronto and in the UK, where he traveled to record his first releases, and the resulting first single - the dark and massive pop-gem "Sympathy" - landed him a BBC Radio 1 premiere with Annie Mac, and praise from Pigeons & Planes who said "one of the best debut songs we've heard"

Today Est-Her shares his second-ever single, another self-released track entitled "Last Minute Wedding." Accompanied by a dramatic music video that was self-directed by Est-Her, "Last Minute Wedding" is another exciting look at what's to come for this talented new artist. Listen to the track and watch the video now over at Pigeons & Planes.

Est-Her explains:

"I've been sitting on some of these tracks for a year now, and it feels so good to release more and more. My first track 'Sympathy' was pretty aggressive, so thought I'd take a deep breath with 'Last Minute Wedding' which I wrote with a crazy talented young producer from France named Poter Elvinger. I have about three albums-worth of music I'm sitting on at the moment, and my laptop is dying. I think it's time.

"When I'm writing, I always have some film playing in the background. When I finish each track, I splice together these supercuts from either scenes of films that I love, or random clips I think best suits the song. For 'Last Minute Wedding,' I started compiling a ton of home movies of weddings taped on VHS, and sped them up to look like a flip book. I had fleshed out a whole bride and hearse concept, and brought it to a good friend of mine to help me film it on a small budget. It was way too much work for the team of people we had, but it all worked out and it feels good share it."

FRIGS Share New Track 'Doghead', Wolf Parade Tour Starts Today, Debut LP Coming in 2018 via Arts & Crafts

November 15, 2017

“led by vocalist Bria Salmena, whose affecting brood places FRIGS in the same canon as other emotive, female-led indie outfits—think Angel Olsen, Torres, Weyes Blood, et al. And they’re of that same caliber, too.”- Nerdist

“Vicious slabs of noise are offset against open-ended guitar notes reminiscent of Deerhunter and Preoccupations” - DIY

“Salmena's vocal emphasis flips between gruff and sweet, and the pace moves from militant, atonal power rock to a woozy, notably powerless standstill” - The FADER

“sludgy, scuzzed-out post-punk awash in psychedelic feedback and the grunge-hewn emotional ferocity of singer Bri Salmena. It's visceral. It spits.” - Noisey

Following the release of last year's Slush EP and the standalone single “Chest”, Toronto four-pieceFRIGS today share “Doghead”, the first track to emerge from the band's debut album due for release in early 2018 through Arts & Crafts.

LISTEN: FRIGS – “DOGHEAD”

Of the track, the band says “Doghead was inspired by a charcter in Nick Cave's And the Ass Saw the Angel, using partial dialogue directly from the novel. Themes in the song include how lustful behaviors and jealousy play into a desire for power.”

For the uninitiated, Cornelius is the brainchild of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada. A performing musician since his teens, Oyamada created his creative alter-ego (the name is an homage to the Planet of the Apes), in the early 1990s from the ashes of his previous project, Flipper's Guitar.

With the 1997 release of Fantasma, Cornelius gained international recognition for his cut and paste style reminiscent of American counterparts Beck and The Beastie Boys and was released internationally by Matador Records. Being called a "modern day Brian Wilson" for his orchestral-style arrangements and production techniques, Cornelius subsequently became one of the most sought after producer/remixers in the world, working with a wide range of artists including Blur, Beck, Bloc Party, MGMT, and James Brown.

With 2002's Point, Cornelius' music took a quantum shift, going from sampling “found sounds” to looping organic elements and creating lush soundscapes.  Using water drops as the rhythmic backbone of "Drop" on his vocoder-infused cover of "Brazil", the album dazed and amazed fans and set the path for the next phase of his career.

2007 brought this philosophy to an even higher level with the release of Sensuous. Cornelius' live shows are known around the world for spectacular visuals (all perfectly synchronized to the performance), custom lighting that doesn't simply augment the performance, but becomes another instrument within it, and a full band of equally talented and diverse players.

The companion piece to the album Sensurround + B Sides, earned the nomination for "Best Surround Sound Album" at the 2009 GRAMMY Awards.

The summer of 2016 saw the release of Fantasma  Remastered, on Lefse Records. The package, a 2LP reissue of his classic album, also included 4 additional outtakes and earned Pitchfork's "Best New Reissue."

Cornelius has recorded music for Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, scored the anime mega-film Ghost in the Shell Arise, performed as the backbone of Yoko Ono's reformed Plastic Ono Band, played the Hollywood Bowl with Yellow Magic Orchestra, and co-wrote and produced the Japanese artist salyu x salyu.

"Cornelius, aka Keigo Oyamada, burst onto the U.S. radar with 1997's Fantasma, an overwhelming bricolage of Beach Boys harmonies, psych-pop precision parts, and odd samples that fit perfectly between the sunny naïvete of the Elephant 6 collective and the cosmopolitan chic of the Grand Royal label. His 2001 album Point refined the exuberance, but laid bare Oyamada's prog-rock affections, kraut rhythm obsession, and new age production ear for exquisite organic sound artifacts. Between then and now Cornelius has remixed in 5.1 surround sound, produced sound/film/video art installations, recorded commercials, produced a number of artists, and been raising his son Milo with his wife Takako Minekawa. His 2007 album, Sensuous, delivered its title as a new age-prog jazz aural rubdown standing firmly and proudly outside trends." - Pitchfork

"From rock riffs to cheesy electronics, nothing is off limits here, the gurgling stream of playful beats and gorgeous melodies carried along on a tide of Can's dreamy krautrock, ambient instrumental bliss and infectious '70s rock grooves." - Q Magazine

"Cornelius's 1997 album Fantasma introduced the genre-defying Japanese artist (Keigo Oyamada) to most of the Western world with its everything-in-a-blender style. Nearly 20 years later it still kinda sounds like it's from the future. (Or the '90s future some imagined Tokyo to be.)" -  Brooklyn Vegan

DREAM WIFE Share "Lets Make Out" Video via Noisey and Play LA tonight + NYC Thursday

November 13, 2017

"Punk rock trio Dream Wife make music that flips a middle finger to convention." - The FADER

"Dream Wife's most recent singles are two of the most urgent, empowering, and subversive rock jams of 2017" - Gorilla vs. Bear

"a well-oiled machine worthy of the Strokes but performed with the righteous indignation of Bikini Kill...snappy, punk-informed rock 'n' roll." - Stereogum

"why they rule: Astounding musical precision, addictive melodies, and plenty of heart." -Entertainment Weekly

"Dream Wife offer a soundtrack ripe for a punk Sofia Coppola movie soundtrack" - NYLON

_

London-based and British/Icelandic born punk rock trio Dream Wife just announced their long-awaited self-titled debut album, and today they share a striking music video for the record’s first single. "Let's Make Out," the band's celebratory ode to femme sexuality and consent, was directed by Aidan Zamiri and sees the Wives hosting their very own prom.

Dream Wife explains the video:

"'Let's Make Out' is a light-hearted celebration of sexuality. Women are and have a right to be sexual beings. The video is silly, hedonistic and really fun. There is no shame in sexuality, there is no shame in fun. But remember; consent is key.

"Proms are synonymous with coming of age, a necessary social before graduation. We threw an IRL prom at our recent London show to announce our album and the night ended with much of the cast from the video making out and dancing with us on stage. Prom in many ways represents us coming of age as a band and we're hoping to usher in this new era; dancing, making out, making things with our friends and flipping the script every step of the way."

Since forming in 2015 as a college art school project, Dream Wife - a name chosen as commentary on society's objectification of women - have become one of the foremost up-and-coming bands out of the U.K. They have garnered praise for their early releases and their ferocious live shows, which saw them sell out venues across U.K. and Europe, tour the U.S. withthe Kills, and play festival stages all over the world. Now the band are gearing up to releaseDream Wife on January 26th, 2018 via Lucky Number. Pre-order Dream Wife physicallyhere or digitally here.

Dream Wife made their triumphant stateside debut earlier this year, and will return to the U.S. this week. They play their debut headline show in LA tonight, and play their first-ever New York gig on Thursday. See below to find a show near you, and get your tickets HERE.
